VPX or VITA 46 is a new direction for the board level products. It has a new 7-row high speed connector rated up to 6.25 Gbps. This means that a hybrid backplane or backplane will be necessary to support traditional VMEbus. This proposed ANSI standard provides for a choice of high speed serial fabrics. VPX systems can achieve over 5 Gigabytes per second performance using current fabric speeds. It supports full-mesh architectures by utilizing increased number of serial fabric links on the module.
The specification includes both 3U and 6U form factors. The 6U version is compliant to IEEE-1101.2 conduction-cooled and IEEE 1101.1/10 air-cooled form factor. The 3U version is compliant to PICMG 2.0 Rev 3 air-cooled and VITA 30.1 conduction-cooled form factors.
VPX was designed for the defense/aerospace markets. The defense/aerospace markets continue to drive the need for more bandwidth and increased connectivity for sensor data, more communications information and larger digital images. This specification is supported by component vendors, computer vendors, and major integration companies.
The VPX specification includes:
VITA 46.1 VMEbus Signal Mapping
VITA 46.2 Reserved for PCI Signal Mapping
VITA 46.3 Serial RapidIO Link Technology
VITA 46.4 PCI Express Link Technology
VITA 46.5 Reserved for Hypertransport Link Technology
VITA 46.6 Reserved for Gigabit Ethernet Link Technology
VITA 46.7 Reserved for 10Gbit Ethernet Link Technology
VITA 46.8 Reserved for Infiniband Link Technology
VITA 46.9 XMC & PMC User I/O Mapping
VITA 46.10: Rear Transition Module
VITA 46.11: System Management
VITA 46.20 VPX Switch Slot
Traditional parallel VMEbus and VXS can be integrated into VPX systems through bridging schemes.
A companion specification, known as VITA 48, provides for Ruggedized Enhanced Design Implementation (REDI). VPX REDI increases the useable area on boards and improves the thermal management.
VMETRO is an innovator and technology leader in VXS (VITA 41), VPX (VITA 46) and VPX-REDI (VITA 48) initiatives: VXS as the latest evolution of VMEbus form factors and VPX for a solution for maximum bandwidth and ruggedization.
