VPS 101

What is a virtual private server?

A virtual private server from Virtual Systems is a remotely hosted virtual server that provides all of the performance you’d expect from an on-premise server without any of the hassle of procuring, installing, maintaining and scaling.

Virtual servers support business agility and performance by making IT a utility that supports business, not the other way around.

How is VPS different from shared hosting?

Shared hosting is a common server sharing resources among many clients. Virtual private servers provide a dedicated resource pool of processing, storage and memory. It’s optimized exactly to your needs and can’t be compromised by other company’s computing demands.

VPS Shared Hosting
Dedicated Resource Pool YES NO
Dedicated Storage YES NO
Dedicated Memory YES NO
Optimized to Your Needs YES NO
Separate From Other Company's Computing Resources YES NO

Why should I use VPS instead of hosting my own applications?

There are two main reasons for considering VPS over hosting your own IT infrastructure:

  1. Performance. All servers being equal, Virtual Systems still provides a performance improvement to nearly every customer, regardless of location. Virtual Systems runs a 40GB/second connection between VPS servers and your endpoint devices. That’s 40 to 400 times faster than the typical company connection!*
    *Based on 110MB - 1GB/second Ethernet connectivity
  2. Cost savings. Because of the associated expense, most on-premise servers purchases are considered capital expenditures. To gain the full benefit of the investment, deductions are taken over a multi-year period (typically, five to seven years). However, because technology changes so quickly, most on-premise servers have a useful life of three years, making it difficult to get the full accounting benefit from the investment.
    • In contrast, Virtual Systems hosted VPS solutions are treated as a 100% operating expense—which can be fully deducted for the current tax year in which they are incurred (and every year thereafter!).
    • Plus, there is no time or expense required to research, purchase, install, deploy and scale servers: Virtual Systems does all the work for you.
    • Finally, with a Virtual Systems hosted VPS solution, you only pay for what you need. So there’s no need to over-buy capacity or processing power for infrequent surges. Virtual Systems can scale the solution in increments that make sense for your business needs.

Which applications/environments are supported?

Common environments include Windows Server 2003, 2008, 2012 and Linux Servers Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS and more.
Common applications include SQL and Apache, MySQL and PHP.

Many other applications are also supported, Check with your Virtual Systems representative for more information.

How do I access my VPS?

I Have Connectivity To The Public Internet I Need Connectivity To The Public Internet

I Have an Expiring Contract

I Need Connectivity In Multiple Locations
You can access your Virtual Systems virtual private servers through a virtual private network, ensuring your data stays secure.

If you do not have an existing VPN, Virtual Systems can create one for you.

Virtual Systems can provide a direct, private, secure link between your business, the Virtual Systems data center and the Internet. No problem.

Either solution can work for multiple locations.

Technical administrators can use the desktop client or a vCloud web-delivered application to see consoles and control hardware.

How are my data and applications backed up?

Virtual Systems Virtual Private Servers come with a High Availability Guarantee that any physical server failures will be rebooted within 15 minutes. Additional options, including running mirrored servers, are available.

VPS-related data is backed up nightly to a remote data center. In the event of a failure at the primary data center, data can be restored from the nightly backup. Additional options, including 15-minute backups, are available.

How do I know if I’m a good VPS candidate?

Ask yourself the following questions:
• Do you want a better way to manage IT costs?
• Are you interested in shifting technology from a capital expense to a predictable operating expense?
• Are you concerned about keeping data and applications HIPAA-, SOX-, or GLBA-compliant?
• Do you worry about data security?
• Are you still backing up to tape and storing offsite?
• Are you looking to reduce your IT-related capital expenses?
• Is it time for a major server upgrade?
• Do you have a tested and proven disaster recovery plan in place?
• Are you interested in streamlining your approach to managing IT?
• Do you wish your IT team could be more strategic?

If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, you are a strong candidate for Virtual Systems hosted cloud servers.

How do I buy VPS?

For a simple monthly fee you can start using Virtual Systems virtual private servers.

Using VPS

What does Virtual Systems VPS Guarantee me?

You can be assured your VPS environment will meet a 99.999% uptime standard, 365 days a year. This promise comes with a High Availability Guarantee of no more than 15 minutes of downtime within the data center and nightly data backups.

This approach is above and beyond the plans for most small to medium size businesses. A recent study indicated only 51% of small businesses have an IT continuity plan in place, ensuring IT systems are up and running within 24 hours.

Can I install ________________?

Yes! Anything that functions in a traditional server environment, will work with Virtual Systems VPS.

What about server maintenance?

Virtual Systems manages all physical server maintenance, without service interruption to you. Because we build and maintain all routing, switching and network hardware for you, you don’t need to worry about taking servers offline for upgrades and enhancements.

Compare this with an on-premise server approach, where you manage the responsibility of building and maintaining routing, switching and network hardware and connections. When there’s a problem, you need an IT resource (either an internal employee or an outside IT technician) to identify, test and resolve it — as quickly as possible. If the problem can’t be diagnosed, productivity suffers and customer commitments cannot be met.

On-premise servers demand investments in hardware, software and personnel costs. If problems occur (and they inevitably do), there are additional expenses related to fixing the issue, whether that’s in overtime, travel for an outside resource or training/certifications for an internal resource. Virtual Systems eliminates these worries and expenses with a reliable, predictable server environment.

Do I still need to outsource to an IT company?

Whether you have an employee that wears more than one hat to maintain your technology infrastructure or you have outsourced those tasks to an IT company, your organization requires personnel support to keep your infrastructure up and running.

With Virtual Systems VPS, you can reduce much of the ongoing time required to maintain environments and troubleshoot unforeseen issues from the physical layer through the presentation layer.

Resources can be deployed to a more strategic advantage to support long-term business goals.

If you’re looking for additional support for the application layer and physical desktops, Virtual Systems partners with Dell Managed Service Program and several local Managed Service Providers to provide server-level OS updates, security patches, antivirus and anti-malware protection support for you. Contact Virtual Systems for a resource in your area.

How do VPS and VDI work together?

Combined together, VPS and VDI enable you to shift your IT expenses from significant capital outlays to regular, monthly operating expenses that can be scaled according to your business needs.

  • VPS provides access to corporate applications and data
  • VDI provides access to individual applications and data

Both are centrally located, providing more security, compliance and streamlined IT delivery than current onsite solutions.

Additionally, Virtual Systems runs a 40GB/second connection between VPS servers and your VDI desktops. That’s 40 to 400 times faster than the typical company desktop-to-server connection, for faster access to your corporate data.*

*Based on 110MB - 1GB/second Ethernet connectivity

Can I manage my backups of my VPS environment with Virtual Systems?

Yes, Virtual Systems customers now have the option to manage their backups. Visit https://www.vsystems.com/veeamcloud/vsystems-veeam-login/ or click here to get more information.

Security

How do I know my data and applications are secure?

Virtual Systems takes the guesswork out of application and data security.

Only authorized users may access the data center where servers are stored. Access is monitored 24x7x365.

Data in motion is protected through a secure virtual networking using VLAN technology. Data in use is secured by Active Directory role-based access controls, ensuring only authorized users have access to corporate data and applications. Data at rest is stored on secure storage. Self encrypted drives are also optionally available.

What happens if there’s a problem at a data center?

In the event of a physical server failure, Virtual Systems High Availability Guarantee (standard with every VPS purchase), will bring the backup server online within 15 minutes.

In the event of a critical failure in one data center, a restore will occur from a remote data center location.

How are my applications and data backed up?

Virtual Systems performs nightly backups using the most robust, efficient backup solution available on the market today.

This process occurs between multiple data centers so we can backup to and from one data center to another.
